With no let-up for the band, Saturday July 7th saw the 17th Pals’ travel over to the Royal Hospital in Chelsea to perform and entertain the Chelsea Pensioners and their family and friends. Haven House 2018

On Sunday 1st July – ‘Battle of the Somme Day’, the 17th Pals’ performed at the Haven House Summer Fair in recognition of the sterling work undertaken by the centre in Woodford Green and in particular the help and support given to Steve Jenkins’ family following the loss of his grandson Max last Year. In incredibly hot and uncomfortable conditions the band performed for an hour with Steve talking every so often about the O’s service and sacrifice in the Great War.

Fresh from their successful performance at Leyton Orient the day before, the 17th Pals’ once again lead the St George’s Day Parade in Highams Park. On another hot and sunny day, the Band formed up on the Broadway before marching down Selwyn Avenue and round to Highams Park Baptist Church. Following the service, the band formed up outside the church before marching up Cavendish Road, into Winchester Road and and then the Broadway, before stopping at Signal Walk. 17th Pals’ Smash Attendance Figures At The O’s!

The 17th Pals’ Battalion Band played in front of their biggest attendance to day when over five thousand people witnessed a first-class performance by the band – to be exact, 5166 cheered and clapped as stirring marches such as Bridlington, Shamrock and Officer Cadet were played. On a unseasonably hot scorching day, the 17th Pals’ commemorated and in some ways re-enacted Clapton Orient’s final league game of the season on 24th April 1915, when the team, having just beaten Leicester Fosse, change into their uniforms and march round the pitch…

Leyton Orient Football Club has a proud history, none more so than when O’s players, staff and officials, along with supporters joined-up en masse into the 17th Middlesex – The Footballers’ Battalion in the early months of the Great War. 11th April 2007, commemoration service at St Mary’s Church, Chigwell for Pte Thomas Edwards VC The following text was published in the local Guardian: PTE Thomas Edwards (1861-1952) is buried at St. Mary’s Church, High Road, Chigwell. He was part of The Royal Highlanders (The Black Watch) attached to the Royal Navy during the Battle of Tamaai.
